Clinical observation of acute drug intoxications

Abstract
Clinical observation was analyzed on 732 cases with acute drug intoxications who admitted to emergency room of Chonnam University Hospital in Kwangju, Korea from Jan. 1, 1983 to Dec. 31, 1983.
The following results were obtained;
1. Total number of cases with actue drug intoxications was 732 which was occupied 5.25% of total patients of emergency room admitted and the average annual incidence for past 5 years was 5.49%.
2. Among 732 cases, accidental poisoning cases was 13.4% and suicide attempted cases with poisoning was 86.6%.
Sex incidence was that male to female ratio of accident group was 1.9:1 and its ratio of suicide attempted group was 1:1.
In the age incidence, 51.0% of accident cases was in the first decade and suicide attempted cases was highest in the third decade(40.6 % ).
3. The monthly incidence was highest in late spring and summer season (April to August) in both groups.
4. The common drugs of poisoning in accident group were agricultural chemicals (38.8%), therapeutic medicines(23.5%) and rodenticides(20.4%), and those in suicide attempted group were also agricultral chemicals (46.7%), rodenticides(22. 2 %) and sedatives(16. 2 % ).
5. The causes of poisoning in accident group was accidental ingestion of drugs 84.7% and inhalation 15.3%. The common motivation in the suicidal attempts was familial discords 33%, and remainders were love affairs 27 and psychiatric disorders 12.2%.
6. The most pronounced frequent symptom was impairment of consciouseness occupying 34.8% in accident and 69.8% in suicide attempted group respectively. And vomiting, cyanosis and convulsion were frequently observed.
7. While accident group was poisoned mainly at daytime, suicide attempted group was largely ingested at night.
8. The check on occupation disclosed the farmer 61. 1 io in accident group and unemployed 33%, students 20.7% farmers 13.3% in suicide attempted group.
9. As the school carrier, the high school group showed highest incidence (37.5%) in suicide attempted group.
10. There were no significant relationship in the socioeconomic, marital status, religion and residental area.
11. The fatality rate was 11.2% in accident group and 18.8% in suicide attempted group. And their prognosis in the most of patients with poisoning was likely to be decided within 24 hours after admission to hospital.
